This outstanding Dutch spring-flowering cultivar is described as a cross between 'Shin deshojo' and 'Beni fushigi'. The small to medium-sized leaves emerge a bright pink-red with yellow veins, the yellow slowly expanding toward the red margins to give a long spring-early summer colour display. As the yellow spreads toward the pink-red margins, the veins become greener which spreads outward until the whole leaf is a shiny green but still with traces of bronze-red margins in late summer. This forms a contrasting background to the bright pink-red new leaves emerging through the summer. The foliage then turns bright orange to red in the autumn.
The five to seven-lobed leaves are moderately deeply divided. Each lobe is ornate with a tail-like tip and toothed margins. The leaves tend to bunch together. The leaf stalks are red and the young shoots become dark red.
'Phoenix' forms a compact broad shrub, estimated to grow up to 5m (16ft) tall and 2.5m (8ft) wide. It was selected and named by Dick van der Maat, Netherlands.
