Berberis thunbergii
Dense, rounded, deciduous shrub with obovate, entire leaves, to 3cm (1¾ in) long, fresh green above and bluish green beneath, turning orange and red in autumn. Umbel-like racemes of 2-5, rarely solitary, red-tinged, pale yellow flowers (1cm (½ in) long, are borne along the branches in mid-spring, succeeded by ellipsoid, glossy red fruit, to 8mm (3/8in) long. Excellent for hedging.
